I Lived on ₦5,000 a Week in Lagos – Here’s What I Learned

Lagos, Nigeria’s bustling megacity, is notorious for its high cost of living.

The fast-paced lifestyle, rising prices, and ever-growing demand can make it seem like an impossible place to live on a budget.

So, for an experiment, I decided to challenge myself: Can I survive on just 5,000 Naira a week in Lagos?

The Challenge Begins

At first, 5,000 Naira didn’t seem too far-fetched. It’s just over 700 Naira a day – surely that should cover the basics: food, transport, and small essentials. I set out with optimism, determined to make it work. But reality quickly set in.

Food: The Struggle Is Real

Food is one of the most significant expenses in Lagos, especially if you’re trying to eat healthy or on the go. I had to cut back on fancy meals and focus on simple, affordable options like rice, beans, and local street food. The famous “buka” joints were my go-to for cheap but filling meals, but even then, it felt like I was constantly monitoring every Naira.

There were days when I had to skip lunch or rely on smaller portions to stretch the budget. In the end, the meals were basic, but they got me through.

Transportation: Navigating the City

Public transport in Lagos can be both affordable and unpredictable. I relied on buses, keke napep (motorcycles), and the ever-convenient Okada (bike taxis) to get around. While fares are relatively cheap, they add up quickly, especially during the busy hours when traffic is heavy.

I had to plan my routes carefully, avoid unnecessary trips, and walk more than I usually would. Sometimes, this meant showing up late or sacrificing comfort for the sake of saving a few Naira.

Social Life: A Tightrope Walk

Lagos is a city where events, parties, and hangouts happen every weekend, and skipping these experiences felt like missing out on the pulse of the city. But with just 5,000 Naira, I quickly realized that fun comes with a price.

I had to say “no” to most social invites, cutting back on dinners, outings, or even simple meetups with friends. I still found ways to stay engaged by attending free events or hanging out at home, but my social life became a lot quieter than usual.

Lessons Learned

Living on 5,000 Naira a week in Lagos was challenging but also eye-opening. It made me rethink my spending habits and highlight just how quickly expenses can pile up in a city like Lagos. It also showed me how important budgeting is and how even small choices can have a big impact on your daily life.

Ultimately, surviving on 5,000 Naira in Lagos required discipline, creativity, and a willingness to adapt. But while it wasn’t easy, it certainly provided valuable lessons that I won’t soon forget.
