How To Prep Your Skin Before Applying Makeup

Nowadays, makeup has taken a whole new dimension.

Before applying any makeup products, beauticians advise that the skin be properly prepared, so the makeup lasts longer.

Also, preparing the skin the right way will help prevent makeup products from clogging the pores.

So how do you prep the right way? This guide will help. Check it:

1. Cleanse properly

Start by washing your face with a gentle cleanser suited to your skin type. This step removes dirt, oil, and leftover makeup and gives you a fresh base to work with. Cleansing removes dead cells, clears pores and help your skin to take in air before adding any product.

2. Exfoliate

Use a mild exfoliator to slough off dead skin cells. This step smooths your skin’s texture, helping foundation glide on seamlessly. However, you must avoid overdoing it to prevent irritation. Using it 2 to 3 times in a week works.

3. Hydrate the skin

After exfoliating, apply a lightweight moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated. Hydration plumps your skin and prevents foundation from clinging to dry patches. If you have oily skin, opt for an oil-free formula. Do not apply too much so your face doesn’t seem heavy and wet.

4. Use primer

A primer is your secret weapon for long-lasting makeup. This comes in different forms. You can use the actual primer or other products that serve the same function. Choose the one that suits your needs—mattifying for oily skin, hydrating for dry skin, or blurring for large pores.

5. Apply sunscreen

The last on the list is your sunscreen. This ensures that sun rays, which can be harmful to your skin over time, are kept at bay. Even if you’re staying indoors, apply a lightweight sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Many modern SPFs double as primers, giving you added skin protection.

A proper skin prep not only secures your makeup but also helps you remove dead cells, open up pores for fresh air, and enhance your overall glam.
