Widow Loses ₦47k From ₦50k Salary After Caring for Sick Child

A Nigerian widow working as a cleaner recently faced a harsh salary deduction. Although her monthly salary was ₦50,000, she had ₦47,000 deducted after taking leave to care for her sick child.

Even though she had informed the Human Resources (HR) department and obtained permission, she was still issued a query, resulting in her receiving only ₦3,000 for that month.

The incident sparked widespread outrage, with many questioning the company’s decision. Online reactions included calls for legal action, with one user remarking, “That HR has no right to deduct her salary. She can take the company to court.” Many others criticized the company’s treatment of the widow.

Fortunately, the widow received support from her church community. During a service, her pastor publicly highlighted her situation, giving her ₦100,000 and promising a Point of Sale (POS) machine, which was later provided. Church members also donated an additional ₦100,000, helping her establish a POS business.

This case highlights the critical need for fair employment practices and demonstrates how community support can make a significant difference during difficult times.
