NURTW Official ‘Shamelon’ Allegedly Beats Dispatch Rider to Death in Lagos

A disturbing incident on Lagos Island has sparked outrage after reports surfaced that Shamsideen Adio, popularly known as Shamelon, a senior figure in the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), allegedly assaulted a dispatch rider.

The confrontation reportedly occurred on Tapa Street, Lagos Island, on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, and has since circulated widely through video clips and eyewitness accounts.

According to those present, the altercation began when the dispatch rider’s vehicle obstructed Shamelon’s path. What started as a minor traffic disagreement escalated into violence, with Shamelon and some associates allegedly beating the rider severely.

Witnesses claim the rider was punched, wrestled to the ground, and further brutalised in an attempt to strip him of his belongings.

Reports also suggest that this was not the first time such an incident had been linked to the NURTW chieftain, as similar complaints of violent conduct have trailed him in recent weeks.

While many online reports describe the rider as being beaten “to pulp” and even claim he “gave up” after the assault, it remains unclear whether he actually died. So far, no official confirmation has been provided regarding the victim’s condition.

Human rights activists have since petitioned the Inspector General of Police, calling for a full investigation into the matter. They argue that only a transparent inquiry can establish the truth and ensure accountability.

The shocking nature of the incident has provoked widespread anger on social media, with residents and activists demanding justice.

For many, the case highlights the vulnerability of dispatch riders and other informal transport workers who often find themselves at the mercy of more powerful individuals. It also raises broader questions about law enforcement, accountability, and the unchecked influence of transport union leaders in Lagos.
