ASUU Announces Two-Week Strike Over Unmet Demands

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared a two-week total and comprehensive warning strike across all public universities in Nigeria.
The announcement was made by the union’s National President, Professor Chris Piwuna, during a press briefing held at the University of Abuja on Sunday, October 12, 2025.
According to Piwuna, the decision follows the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum issued to the federal government on September 28, 2025, over the government’s failure to address long-standing issues affecting university lecturers.
He explained that the strike, which will take effect from 12:00 midnight on Monday, October 13, 2025, will serve as a warning to the government to honour previous agreements and attend to critical demands.
ASUU directed all its chapters nationwide to fully comply with the industrial action, warning that no academic or administrative activities should continue during the strike period.
The union’s grievances include unpaid salary arrears, earned academic allowances, revitalization funds, and the need for a fresh renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU–Federal Government agreement.
Professor Piwuna emphasized that the two-week action is a warning phase, adding that the union may consider a total and indefinite strike if the government fails to respond within the stipulated time.
