5 Things You Should Not Do On Your Birthday

As children, birthdays were such a big thing for us – donning a crisp new dress, calling all your friends over, birthday caps, snacks, and of course cakes and gifts!

The joy was not so much about turning a year older, but the celebration aspect of it, and of course, the fact that you were being treated special and were not being told off by your parents! (even it was for only a day).

As we grew older, birthdays lost their charm, now relegated to a quiet dinner (if at all), and some customary ‘Happy Birthday’ wishes from friends and family.

However, regardless of whether you are big on celebrations or not, there are some things you should not do on your birthday… Here they are..

1. Talk about getting older

Of course each birthday, you turn older, but you also turn wiser alongside. Constantly talking about turning older drives a negative connotation, which in turn, will make you feel older than you actually are. Instead, it is a good idea to talk about your learnings, achievements, and success stories along the way, on this day.

2. Feel obligated to celebrate (or not)

When it comes to celebrating your birthday, there is no hard and fast rule. While the pressure of answering, ‘what plans tonight’, can be unsettling, it is completely up to you, and you should not be obligated to make plans only because you are expected to. It is perfectly okay to snuggle in bed with a good book as well. On the other hand, if you want your birthday to be as grand as it can get, go for it!

3. Work

This one is a bit old-school, but despite work commitments, it is okay to take a break from all the madness on your birthday. Like we said earlier, you should not be obligated to celebrate or not, but taking the day off means you can reflect on your past year, and the lessons you learnt. Even if you do not have anything planned, it is a good idea to spend the day at home, lazing around

4. Feel pressured to spend money

Even if you want to celebrate, there are times when a financial crunch holds you back. In this case, it is perfectly okay to share that info with your friends and family, and instead suggest going dutch. If they really care about you on your special day, they won’t really bother about who is paying, instead they will only want to see you happy. Another way to go about it is to call everyone home, and order some finger food like pizza, which is enjoyed by everyone

5. Ignore yourself

Even if you treat the day as a normal day, prioritize some self care for yourself. This includes listening to music, reading books, and doing anything and everything that makes you happy. If you want to go a little fancy, you can hit the spa/salon and get a makeover or just go to the movies with a tub of popcorn. Remember, you do not need anyone special to enjoy your special day
