FG to Hold Low-Key 65th Independence Day Celebration

The Federal Government has announced that this year’s Independence Day celebration will be observed on a low-key scale as Nigeria marks 65 years of nationhood.

Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this on Monday in Abuja at a Pre-Independence World Press Conference.

According to him, the theme for the celebration is “All Hands on Deck.” Activities began with Jumu’ah prayers on Friday, followed by a Thanksgiving Service on Sunday.

Idris said the unveiling of the National Value Charter, developed by the National Orientation Agency (NOA), will be one of the highlights of the commemoration. A National Students’ Debate is also scheduled as part of the anniversary events.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Value Charter is designed to promote patriotism and responsible citizenship by setting out the obligations of both government and citizens.

The charter has two components: the Nigerian Promise, which commits government to values such as equality, democracy, peace, inclusivity, entrepreneurship, freedom and meritocracy; and the Citizens’ Commitment, which emphasizes discipline, accountability, tolerance, resilience, environmental consciousness, and leadership.

Through campaigns, community engagement and digital platforms, the NOA aims to use the charter to foster national pride, strengthen unity, and build a value-driven society.
